Why Your Business Needs A Credit Card Machine Terminal

Credit card machine terminals are becoming ever more essential as customers switch from using checks and cash to using plastic cards. In some parts of the developed world the check is even being phased out.

Even business owners are now starting to make more payments by card, so no matter who your business is going to be serving you will need to be thinking of finding ways of accommodating this. There is always a way to take cards, whether you have a merchant account and a dedicated terminal or not, but the greatest advantage lies with those who have.

If you are just starting out in business, or you have previous credit problems, you may find it difficult to obtain a merchant account and payment terminal. If this is the case, there are alternatives. There are several third party processors who will allow you to take payments online, provided what you are selling falls within their acceptable terms. Some of these third party services charge you a set up fee, but many don't. In all cases, you will need to pay a fee on every transaction processed, just as you would with a merchant account.

Third party processors may be a way to get your business started, but they do have severe limitations. For a start, you will not be able to process payments in any other situation than online. You can't take a payment over the phone, for example, because you are never allowed to enter customer details for them. You may be able to take payments in the field if you have a laptop and a wireless broadband connection, but this will never be as convenient as having your own wireless card terminal.

Having a dedicated terminal makes it easy to take payments in whichever business environment you find yourself in. In a store, you need a simple fixed terminal which you can rent for a nominal sum. If you need a more mobile solution, it will be slightly more expensive. In a restaurant, for example, it is essential to be able to move from table to table, and if you are selling outdoors it may be inconvenient to have a trailing wire you could trip over.

You can also have a credit card machine which can process customer not present (CNP) payments, although you will always have to pay slightly higher fees for this to offset the higher risk. This will allow you to take a payment over the phone as soon as you have managed to convince your buyer. Many credit card terminals can be installed and working within days, and if you shop online there are plenty of providers to choose from. Once you have these facilities, you should notice a quick increase in business. Modern consumers expect to use a credit card machine.
